Nightmare On Your Street: Making the most of your First Halloween

You’ve moved to a new neighborhood and couldn’t wait to meet your neighbors! Summer went by, Fall is creeping along and you still haven’t had a chance to talk to many of them. Halloween is the PERFECT time to meet everyone! Cause a stir with some of the following ideas.

  1. Decorate: Call some attention to yourself by decorating your house. I have noticed Halloween decorations have really gained popularity. Driving through town they range from cutesy to scary and I love it! It’s such an easy way to start up conversation. At my house we have a combination of cutesy and scary. I am more of a pumpkin, smiley witches and ghosts kind of girl whereas Mr. LoveWhereYouLive favors the creepy spider, graveyard type. So right underneath that 2 story spider web on my house is Chase from Paw Patrol hugging a pumpkin. And in between those grave stones are pumpkins, mums and scarecrows…..all with Halloween lights. Ha! It ain’t pretty, but it certainly is Halloween! Let that personality shine! (we have an intense white vs. colored lights debate ramping up in about 3 weeks #thenightmarebeforechristmas)

  3. Teal Pumpkin Project: The Teal Pumpkin Project was started by a mom who has a child with allergies. Being an allergy mom myself to 2 children with multiple allergies I can understand the feeling of walking house to house collecting candy that my kids can’t eat. We started the mantra “you get what you get and you don’t get upset” but with the Teal Pumpkin Project gaining ground my kids have many more options at different houses. Teal Pumpkin houses give out glow sticks, stickers, pencils, crayons, erasers and in general any non food “treat.” Not only is it a nice way to show you care, but non-allergy kids LOVE this stuff too! And any parent welcomes the idea of a sugar-free option. Grab some teal paint and start painting! #tealpumpkinproject #allergies

  5. Don’t forget the furry family members! They do tricks for treats too! A cookie jar with simple milk bones can have a big impact with making an impression. Remember pets are family! If you really want to let your “Suzie Home Maker” shine make some home made halloween doggie treats! Take a look at this nice list of recipes from the people at Little Things. #wedotricksfortreats #pawsitivelyscary
  6. Mom, Dad, Grandpa, Grandma, Auntie & Uncle are Cold and THIRSTY. Let me tell you a little “spirit” goes a long way on Halloween! Offering a nice fall cocktail can be a fun way to show your social side. If you are the type that enjoys entertaining you bet you will get a nice reception when you send out your holiday mixer invites. Here are a couple of tried and true recipes from years past in the LoveWhereYouLive household. From the Wholesome Dish-Caramel Apple Sangria AND Apple Pie on the Rocks from The Whiskey Gypsy

Can I get a HOOOOOMYGOD -This stuff is amazing. Proceed with Caution! Things can get “Scary” pretty quick! Some plain ol’ apple cider for the mummys with early mornings or those expanding the ghost and goblin count in their family will always be appreciated. #spirits

  8. Stellar Costumes: I have a little problem….it’s a mild obsession with family costumes. My kiddos have been Eeyore and Roo -Mickey, Pluto and Goofy (Mr. Family Friendly)-Sully, Mike & Boo- Jake, Izzy & Captain Hook – Red Bird, Bomb & Chuck (Mr. Family Friendly rounded this out as King Piggy), and this year is a Pokemon theme. For the whole family. I think this might be the last possible year that I can make all of my kids do something as one (sniffle). Eh-a little Italian guilt and I might be able to get a couple more years of out of them! There are some pretty amazing full family themed costumes out there for the taking. And just saying- seeing parents dress up and walk the neighborhood is delightful! And I think we all could use a little more delightful in our life. Who wouldn’t enjoy seeing a full family cast of Top Gun ring their door bell? #delightfulandfrightful
  9. Organize a pre-party or some games if your kids are really little and you know they probably wont last long in the trick or treating circuit. Everyone in the neighborhood can meet up and chat and get to know you and your family before they go out. Many of the ideas from above can be applied. Check out the My Life & Kids Blog for some inspiration! In the past we have done the Donut Chomp, Candy Corn Bingo and Pin the Boo on the Ghost. #workhardplayhard #witchwaytotheparty
